Do Your Research Before Buying a Monkey

Monkeys are very popular, whether they’re in zoos or in movies or television. They are very intelligent and they have a lot to offer us. But if you want to own one of these monkeys as your pet, you will need to do a lot of research first. Monkeys require a huge amount of space to roam and to play, and they are very expensive. Most of all, they will need to be housed in a very secure enclosure. In some places it is even illegal to own a monkey.

All monkeys have opposable thumbs which make them very handy in grabbing things like banana peels and other food items. They also have very long arms and hands and are able to use their feet for climbing and moving things. Monkeys can be found in forests, savannahs and mountain regions all over the world. Some monkeys live in trees only, while others are more ground-oriented and spend much of their time on the savannah.

In the wild, monkeys live in large groups called troops. These groups consist of adults and their offspring and they travel together by day to find food. Within these troop groups, unattached adult males form their own group that is sometimes called a harem.

Most monkeys used in research are macaques and marmosets. They are used in a variety of areas in research including neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, reproductive issues and in testing vaccines and medicines. They are very important in advancing medical science. But despite this, these animals should not be exploited for entertainment and are only to be used when there is no alternative.
