Facts About Monkeys

Monkeys are a diverse family of animals that can be found all over the world. These intelligent mammals are great problem-solvers.

Like many other primates, monkeys live in groups, called troops, consisting of several females with their young and one or more males. These groups often travel together in the wild to find food.

They can communicate with other members of the troop through various facial expressions and body movements. They also use sounds, such as barks, purrs, and screams.

These vocalizations are used for bonding and socializing with other members of the group. Squirrel monkeys, for example, make more than 25 different calls.

Most monkeys are omnivorous, eating a variety of foods. They eat fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, flowers, bark, roots, vegetables, and rodents.

Their diets vary with their environment and the season, depending on what’s available. They might eat lots of insects when they’re in breeding season, then switch to more plants during rainy seasons.

The main threat to most monkey species is human activity. They are at risk of habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as hunting for food or pet trades.
