Monkeys are highly intelligent creatures that are closely related to apes. They have a well-developed brain and the ability to solve complex problems. In addition, they are extremely sociable and live in families. Despite this, they are considered threatened by human conflict and habitat destruction.
Monkeys are found in the rainforests of Africa, Asia and Central and South America. Their diet varies from fruit and nuts to seeds and insects. Most species are communicative and social.
There are about 200 types of monkeys worldwide. Almost all of them are on the decline. The majority of the species are listed as endangered. Some countries have taken action to protect these animals.
Monkeys are classified within the order Primates. There are two suborders: Haplorhini and Simiiformes. Within the Simiiformes are galagos, tarsiers, baboons, rhesus macaques and mandrills.
The apes include the gorilla and chimpanzee. They have large brains and shoulder joints. They are highly intelligent and capable of learning from each other. However, they are also vulnerable to larger predators.
Many countries and local governments don’t allow them as pets. However, many individuals and conservation groups do. These animals are often stressed in captivity.
A notable exception to this are Japanese macaques. In field experiments, they were introduced to foods such as sweet potatoes and candies wrapped in paper. This helped them to overcome problems with obtaining new foods.
Monkeys are highly endangered. Most are listed as vulnerable because of habitat destruction or the international pet trade.
