Monkeys are wild animals that live in trees. They have long tails which they use for balance and to hold onto branches when they jump between them. Monkeys travel in groups called troops and they protect each other from predators. They are also highly intelligent animals. Their large brains allow them to solve complex problems and learn from experience.

They are omnivores but the majority of their diet consists of plants. For example, New World monkey species have diets that are 95% plant with 5% invertebrates. Gelada monkeys have specialized anatomy that allows them to digest leaves and gum. These unique animals have multi-chambered stomachs that allow them to ferment the plants they eat. They eat over 55 different types of leaves as well as fruit and insects.

Many people think that monkeys are herbivores but the majority of their diet is plant based. The exception is the black spider monkey which lives up to its name by looking like a spider and eating leaves.

In the wild monkeys will forage for food so they get a lot of exercise and it keeps them busy. In captivity monkeys need to be kept busy too otherwise they will get bored.

It is important that the monkey’s diet reflects their natural diet. The monkey’s diet should include fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It is important to avoid sugary processed foods as they will make the monkey unhealthy.
