Monkey Facts

monkey

The monkey is the most common creature in popular culture and the best known of all the simians (members of the Infraorder Simiiformes, which also includes lemurs and gibbons). Monkeys are characterized by their long, flexible limbs and dexterous hands and feet, which allow them to climb. Most species of monkey are primarily arboreal, spending most of their time in trees, although some are more ground-dwelling than others.

Monkeys are omnivores and their diet will vary depending on where they live. Most monkeys are fruit eaters but they will also eat leaves, seeds, flowers and insects. Some species have specialized anatomy that allows them to exploit specific food items. For example proboscis monkeys (the ones with the big noses) have a very rigorous diet of unripe fruits and the colobus monkey has a complex digestive system to help them digest the leaves in their diet.

Monkeys are highly active animals and like to hunt for their food. In captivity it is important to keep monkeys occupied so that they don’t get bored. Providing enrichment items is a great way to keep them busy. For instance placing some of their favorite treats in a box that they have to open is a good way to stimulate them and give them exercise. This will also teach them that they need to work for their food rather than being fed it out of a bowl. It can be difficult to feed monkeys that are overweight so being mindful of their weight is key.
