What is a Monkey?

A monkey is a member of the simian (insect-like) order primates, and is any simian that is not an ape or human. Monkeys are arranged in two groups, the Old World monkeys (Cercopithecidae) and New World monkeys (platyrrhine). Both groups are able to communicate using vocalizations, facial expressions and body language. For example, monkeys that bare their teeth might appear to smile; however, this is actually a sign of aggression, Live Science reports. They also use a range of body movements, including head bobbing and yawning to display their emotions.

Many of the monkey species are arboreal, meaning they spend most of their lives in the trees. Others, such as baboons and macaques, spend more time on the ground. Their diets vary according to the individual species. In general, monkeys eat a variety of fruit, leaves, nuts, seeds and flowers, but will also eat insects and spiders when they can.

In folklore, monkeys are often associated with mischief and pranks. If you have a monkey spirit guide, they may be trying to tell you that life isn’t always serious and that it’s important to have fun. The monkey is the perfect spirit animal to connect with if you are feeling stuck in a rut or need some spontaneity in your life. You can connect with your monkey spirit guide through meditation, nature, or even through watching movies that feature them. They can also be a great companion animal to have if you like to travel.
